On a Side Note: What to do with that lone earring you are still holding onto

{here}

Just stumbled across this fabulous idea for a new necklace.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, I’m not sure which) I don’t lose my earrings so I’m off to track down some lost earrings that can be used instead.

Nice to See You Monday

The last few days I’ve finally gotten around to contemplating last year.  I started this blog a few months ago and already I’ve done so much. But there is still much more to do!  I haven’t finalized goals for 2012 so I’ll just start with this week (baby steps, it’s all about baby steps).

Must Do:

  • A happy dance.  First things first, right?  Yesterday, we enjoyed the first day of 2012 outside!  On our bikes.  At the beach.  Happy children.  Happy me.  No rain.  No gloom.  No snow.  Nothing but glorious sun.  THAT is the way to start things off.
  • Love, love, love.  It may be a bit overstated but every day I come closer to the realization that the beautiful stylish me (that I’m trying so hard to figure out) is firmly grounded in who I am.  And who I strive to be is a kind and compassionate woman.  Everything else is second.
  • Start officially planning my upcoming San Diego trip for the end of the month.  More happy dancing over here right now at this very second. What do I want to do when I get there?  Sit in the sun and eat.  That’s it.  My two favorite things.
  • Started a new book, How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World.  Already a bit turned off by the author’s overuse of the word “stupid” in the introduction.  But.  Gonna give this a chance.

Maybe Won’t:

  • Or…  I usually know in the first few pages if a book is worth reading.  I just might take it back.
  • Compare myself to others and if I do I’ll try to stop.  Hopefully practice makes perfect here because I find myself with ample opportunity to practice this one!
  • Make my own 2012 calendar.  I’m so cheap that every year I swear I’m gonna make my own supercool calendar instead of paying $30 for one.  And every year I don’t.  Instead I end up with a cheesy free calendar in late February with pictures of waterfalls on it.  This is the direction I’ll be going this year.  I think.

Monday, You’ve Been Good to Me

Lovin’ it:

  • A garage door that goes UP and DOWN without me having to do a thing.  Well, I have to do one thing.  Sit in my cozy warm car and wait until the garage door goes up and then down, all by itself.  Oh, and give my husband lots of kisses for fixing the broken door.
  • Lush.  I haven’t even tried the skin care stuff and I’m already in love with the product, the company and the Portland shop (thank you employees for entertaining my girls with all the froofy and fun stuff you have).  They’ve really got it going on.  I just hope my skin is as happy as my conscience is!
  • Standard Process Purification Program.  Cleaning the body out this month and boy does it feels good.
  • Roasted garlic and olive oil.  Yum.  Y-U-M.  Can’t stop thinking about it.
  • Wearing nothing but jeans and sweatshirts and cowboy boots this week.  It’s all about pure comfort while the body gets to purifying.

Not so much:

  • Below freezing weather.  Nah.  It’s just not my thing.
  • Trading my morning cup of coffee for a cup of hot water.  It’s just not the same.
  • Staying overnight at my buddy’s house with the super-cozy guest bed.  Well, that was actually the great part.  But not being able to fall asleep because of the 5 and 3-year-old laying next to me who I knew had a lot to drink before going to sleep on this very fine bed that did not have a mattress cover protecting it and ohmygoodness would I be able to scoop them out of bed and onto the toilet fast enough if they did in fact wet the bed?  They didn’t wet the bed.

Nice to See You Monday

Me, Kaia, Elliot and Auntie

Lovin’ it:

  • Running a full three miles in yesterday’s 5k WITHOUT STOPPING! Yee-haw, watch out for me!
  • Sun is out.  Yep, you heard me.  On the Oregon Coast in November, I am seeing sun.
  • Visited CARTM this weekend. Wow, wow and wow. Totally inspired to keep working on becoming a zero waste family.
  • Gonna wear one thing each day this week that I haven’t worn in 2 months or more.  I’m sure everyone is tired of seeing my awesome white shirt every single day.

Not so much:

  • Meal-planning.  I’m so over it.  Can we just eat cereal for every meal instead?
  • Grocery stores. Stop being so un-inspirational.
  • The broken garage door.  Isn’t the whole point of parking in the garage the fact that you don’t have to get out of the car until you are warm and cozy inside?  Getting out of the car to open the garage door before driving inside?  Gotta get that fixed.
  • 11-minute miles.  Is that actually running?  Goal? 9 minute mile please.

It’s Monday and I Have a To-Do List

This week:

DO…

  • Wear Grandma’s jewelry more often
  • Write Pandora a “thank you” card for starting up their Holiday Music.  The days just got that much better!
  • A celebration dance – I got the garage cleaned out enough to fit my car inside.  Seriously?  This was one of my goals for the year.  I’m totally kickin’ my heels right now.
  • Get ready to give lots of love – my parents will be here today!

DON’T…

  • Wait so long before walking down to the beach again.  Three weeks is too long to go without a little sand in my shoes.
  • Ever, ever eat an entire box of Twizzlers again.  It’s hard for me to believe I did that too.  And it’s my forehead and chin that took the beating.  Nearly ran out of concealer this week.
  • Stay inside just because it’s 30 degrees.  Sunny weather is going to get more and more rare.  Bundle up and get out there!
  • Gloat just because my Christmas shopping is done.  {Ha, ha my Christmas shopping is done, I can relax now}.  Oops, did I just do that?

Style: What I’ve Learned so Far

It’s been about 8 weeks since I got all official with my quest for style.  The time has dragged for me (sometimes it’s just not easy to learn something new) but the time I’ve spent has been well worth it.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • Nothing compares to the absolute genius of finding a good tailor.  All of a sudden things fit perfectly!  And if you are a thrift shopper like me, it’s even better.  Take that $10 blazer and add about $12-15 of tweaking here and there and {wa-la} a blazer that fits better than a J. Crew’s $188 Schoolboy Blazer ever would.
  • Actually trying things on in the dressing room instead of giving them a glance and tossing them back onto the rack.  Life changing.
  • Accessories is where it’s all at.  Turn that super-comfy-but-totally-boring t-shirt and jeans into something with personality by tossing on a necklace, wearing the right belt and hoofing it in awesome shoes (all works in progress for me).
  • Patience.  Understanding something doesn’t happen overnight.  Truly learning a skill takes motivation, habit and…patience.

Here’s what I still want to learn (keeping it at three things cuz dang the list is long):

  • Proportion.  I see this word everywhere and for a slow learner petite lady like myself, it could be quite handy.
  • Color.  I don’t instantly see how colors work together.  I’m still uncertain about most things I pair.  Understanding color relationship might just give me a little much-needed assistance.
  • Fun, Risk, Creativity.  Okay, that’s more then three but I had to.  Like I’ve said about Beth at B. Jones Style or the way my sister dresses – half the time it doesn’t matter whether I like what they’ve got on.  The obvious fun they have with their clothing outweighs everything.  That.  I’ve got to learn it.

8 weeks down and 44 to go.

You learn something every day if you pay attention. – Ray LeBlond

It’s Monday and I Have a To-Do List

This week:

DO…

DON’T…

  • Watch any more Grey’s Anatomy or Private Practice.  Crying over people that don’t ACTUALLY EXIST?  Weird and a total waste of time, missy.
  • Listen to Dance Cardio Radio station on Pandora when the girls are in the room.  It’s hard to explain to toddlers what “hot and dangerous” means…  Saying that Ke$ha is talking about kitchen safety is only going to last for so long.
  • Loose my cool.  The girls are giving me a run for my money these days.  Are there any “Keep calm, and don’t give the children away” posters?

It’s Monday and I Have a To-Do List

This week:

DO…

  • Paint my fingernails at least once this week – purple would be fun!
  • Drink 3 liters of water every day – does wonders for my energy.
  • Have a bunch of hankies ready for Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice – there’s gonna be some tears ’round here on Thursday.
  • Wear some colored tights – it’s time to push my comfort level.

DON’T…

  • Jump up and down for the camera – it only makes for some bizarre feet pictures.  Good idea, gone really bad.
  • Forget to take my St. Johns Wort every day this week – that gray weather is NOT going to get me down.
  • Let fear stop me.  Don’t say, “I can’t” because I can.  Lose that “cool” card and just give it all I’ve got.
